Crazed bassoonist and classical music junkie
fireflysymphonies asked: What's the hardest thing you've encountered thus far about being a bassoon performance major? I've been thinking a lot about college and auditions and stuff lately, and I'm just genuinely curious to hear an answer from a bassoon performance major (as a young aspiring performance major myself).
That’s a really hard question to answer. There are a lot of difficult things about being a bassoon performance major - motivation, consistently making good reeds (and for me, dealing with horrible weather changes in FL), having to deal with other music classes that you don’t necessarily want to take, but have to.
I think that one of the hardest things for me is not letting how I think others perceive my playing affect it. As musicians, we tend to be overly critical of ourselves. Sometimes that’s a really beneficial thing, but a lot of the time it’s incredibly detrimental. I can’t explain how many hours I have wasted just worrying about how other people think that I sound, and comparing myself to my peers.
I still struggle with this, but I try and remind myself that none of that matters. It doesn’t matter how X person thinks I sound on a particular day. It doesn’t matter that my technique might not be quite as great as somebody else’s right now, because I go to school to learn about these things. It doesn’t matter if you take an extra year or five to get to a place in your playing where you could get a job. What matters is that you get there. And that is an incredibly difficult thing for most people to handle.
